A Farewell To FrecklesGuest Post
Freckles was happiest when he was eating pepperoni, digging holes, running on the beach “biting” water, exploring the woods or just curling up on his favorite sofa. He was a nester who made all of us (including himself), dizzy with his bed making rituals. Freckles ran around the house with stuffed aliens or snakes squeaking them mercilessly until Zadie, or anyone who cared to play, would chase him. He sat on my lap whenever he had the chance and loved to go on road trips and sleep in hotel beds. There were times that he was a slow learner but once a trick was mastered, he never forgot it. He grew into a 140lb dog but never stopped being a puppy and that, I believe, is how he completely won our hearts.
In the truest sense of the word, Freckles was a friend. He loved his life and touched the hearts of everyone he met. He loved his cats, Otie, Poopsie and Church and his girlfriend/wife/sister Zadie. It could be said with people, Freckles sometimes appeared aloof – but I know without a doubt, he cared deeply for all the people in his world.
In May of 2013 Freckles was diagnosed with Lymphoma. With the help of the incredible staff at Canada West Veterinary Hospital and the unflagging support of Lisa, Dr. Saam and Lindsey, he underwent chemotherapy treatment and spent 10 months in remission. It was 10 happy months with very few side effects, chewing on sticks, checking his “pee-mail,” rolling in the grass, laying in the sun and playing “chicken” with me in the underground parking.
On March 1st, 2014 at Canada West, Freckles passed away peacefully in my arms. Staying true to himself, Freckles ate pieces of pepperoni until his very last moments. He will be remembered for his unconditional devotion, his enormous capacity for joy and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of everyone he met. We will forever miss you Biggie…
