Sherwin Williams Color of the Year 2024: Upward

Posted by Anita Petersen on 12th Oct 2023

In the world of interior design, 'tis the season for color predictions from our favourite paint companies like Sherwin Williams

Here at SIF, we eagerly await what colors are predicted to take hold in the New Year so we can all obsess over how we’re going to add these fabulous new colors to our own spaces.

We are Seriously in Love with Sherwin William’s 2024 Color of the Year, Upward (SW 6239)

As neutrals become lighter and color choices bolder, Upward emerges as a refreshing shade that captures the essence of healing and tranquility. This light, breezy and blissful hue is part of the brand's 2024 Colormix Forecast, nestled within the blues and greens palette. It draws inspiration from the sky, offering a departure from earthy greens and feels fresh with a touch of tradition.

Color and Wellness

Upward is not just a soft, beautiful blue; it represents a shift in how we perceive the relationship between color and wellness. While previous colors like 2022’s Evergreen Fog and 2023’s Redend Point provided stability in uncertain times, Upward invites us to take a moment for ourselves, especially as the pace of 'normal' life accelerates. And boy, is it accelerating!

Where to Use Upward

This shade of blue evokes calming feelings typically associated with greens. It's versatile and can be used in various spaces in the home. Perfect for bedrooms and living rooms, offering a serene environment for relaxation, it’s also perfect for spa-like bathrooms and welcoming dining rooms. We think it will look amazing with white and cream furniture and upholstery.

Upward's subtle gray undertones make it ideal for spaces where a touch of freshness is desired without being overwhelming. We’d love to see it used on ceilings to mimic the open sky, creating a sense of freedom.

Aligning with Scandinavian Slow Living

This color also aligns with the resurgence of Scandinavian slow living principles and a shift from modern farmhouse to fresh coastal aesthetics. To achieve a coastal look, pair Upward with whites, light-to-mid-toned woods and cream or light grey fabrics. For a little hint of drama, add in some black touches with a cabinet or legs on furniture.

For a contemporary vibe

Darker grays like Peppercorn or Iron Ore can provide striking contrasts, especially when combined with clean architectural lines. Regardless of its application, this color shines when paired with textured fabrics, offering a balanced and harmonious design element.
